Just letting you know, I have Almost 8TB of data but i can never share it on DC++ for the Lan. So next lan i will be useing LANDC++ So if u want to DLL of me u need that. Ill have a DC++ version running too but i can only share my Holiday trips Pic's and some Home made Star trek movies Cough cough

Happy? Can we move to LANDC++ ? or DC++ 0.306 (No hashing)
The new DC++ also verifys the file after you have download it which takes around the same time it took to download it in the 1st place.

UPDATE: So after some research i found this

http://ravestyles.com/downloads/?dir=&download=PhantomDC-0.306-1.19c.rar
Like LANDC++ but way more stable !

With storage going up and up i think a hash less LAN would be great for now and the future.

Just to let you know...LANDC++ (or anything like it) will not be supported at our LAN. Yes...hashing IS a BIG bitch, but once it's done it doesn't take long updating it. LANDC++ created more headache then what it's worth.

The reason we moved to 0.75 is because it supports downloading from alternative locations, and manages downloading alot more efficient. What that means is everyone downloads at much faster speeds (and the fileserver/game server are not hammered as much because the load is spread). Frag and myself tested this extensively and felt that it utilized the Gigabit switch/Network alot better then any other version so far (and also supports Linux..hehe) If we went back to using the likes of LANDC++, the Fileserver would get bogged down so much it would be back at really slow speeds again (with anything more then 3-4 uploads).

If you feel sharing/hashing that much is not an option...then please, don't share it. I'm there to play games which is what the LAN is about, and why I give out random prizes during gaming (to reward the gamers). Wink

Haap is spot on right here. Before going to the hashing client, typical download speeds were down to 50 kb/s in some cases. If that's the total speed your going to get, you wouldn't even bother coming to a lan because your typical dsl internet would be faster.

I can also certain understand your hesitation to hash. Assuming 50 mb/s hashine speed, it would take you close to 48 hours.

Im the one who gets yelled at to share but i cant lol

PhantomDC-0.306 is great tho but i get the issue

But how about this, If u wanted to play with a new switch for you lans i can get a linksys 48port full gigabit managed layer 2 switch supports spanning tree and link aggregation 802.3ad and 96gbps backbone for the lan's installed and set up by a MOE network deployment guy. Its a bloody fast thing we pull 50+ mb/s under full load (30 to 40 people) He can bring his file server to take the pressure of the server as well

25TB File server 16 x 1.5TB drives giving more out put then a SSD and maybe if you lucky a 42TB file server if Matt comes down.

That should lighten the load on things

Its up to you Happy. The only thing is the switch will have to be swapped to the normal (Yours) one around 8.30 lol

So happy how much data do you have?

What switches do you use with your direct connect client?

I have been using Landc++ for the last 3 years. I have even written documentation on how to use LanDC++ and given it to LanSmash. Would you like to borrow.

I have 15tb of data. AND THERE IS NO WAY I CAN HASH THAT.

And I dont know where people are get 50kbs speeds from. Every lan I go to I can download off people at around 80m/b sec and upload at that as well.

Once there are quite a few ppl connected everyone seems to even out at around 30mb/sec.

You guys are the first lan I have ever heard of that does not use a non hashing client.

I think that has something to say for itself

(also you say LanDC++ will not be supported at your lan) That means it can still be used providing we can support it? that sounds good to me.

So what your saying is your LAN is all about LEECHING and not so much gaming? I've always gone to LAN's to play games...guess I got it wrong huh! Razz Leeching isn't on the high piority list with our LAN, and the day that it is, is the day I'll shut it down (i'm not much of a fan of multiplayer FTP).

Thanks for the offer on the switch, but we will stick to our own....it hasn't let us down yet. And there's no way i'm swapping cables/switches around during a LAN.

Like I said...don't share it, and join in the gaming...you might just win a prize! lol However, we may (slim change here) trial running both versions depending on what us admin find on testing. The Fileserver won't be running however, nor will any of our Linux box's.

Its about both

Its about being fair

Its about giving people freedom and the choice to use multiple programs that work best.

I bet you dont even use DHCP their either.

Also how many people do you get rock up to ur lans?

30?

I think one has to remember that the legalities surrounding file sharing at LAN's are sketchy at best. After all, we're sitting there illegally sharing pirated software, movies, TV shows, games and in some cases pornography.

Ignoring that, for the moment... You have an entire month between LAN's during which it shouldn't be hard to allow your data to hash. (How the hell you managed to fill 15tb with useful data that you actually use is beyond me.. packrat with an e-penis extension much?)

I find hashing a minor inconvenience, but it's sure as sure a lot better than the sometimes 800k max I was getting with previous versions.
A couple of LAN's ago I managed to retrieve about 700gb of data that I'd lose due to a drive croaking a week earlier. It didn't even take half the LAN so I still had plenty of time to game. There's no way in hell I'd have been able to do that with an older version. I'd have only managed 100gb~
Which would have taken me the whole LAN and I wouldn't have gotten in any gaming.
But when it comes down to the nitty gritty you're lucky file sharing is even allowed. After all, he's highly illegal, regardless of whether it's in the spirit of LAN's or not.

Personally, I think the best option would be for the LAN to allow leeching only during certain periods. Lets say from 12-1, 5-6 and then 8-9. That should be plenty time enough for people to get enough data to keep them occupied. Most people are able to do 30-200gb per month at home as well, it's certainly not like back in the day when everyone was stuck on dial up.

Anyway, the crux of it is that it's Mr_Haapy's LAN, he's put in 6-7 years of hard work just about every month so I think that he's got every right to make this decision and not be whined at about it. That said, I think that you'll find he has the support of the other admins, ex admins and helpers that have put in the hard yards over the years too. Smile

Matt.

PS: bitty3, don't you run a leechers LAN out of then masonic lodge now anyway?

Please dont assume things. Hashing 15 -20tb just DOES NOT WORK. Its not a matter of it taking a week. It just doesnt work.

All I am saying is adding some variety is always not such a bad thing. I cannot see the disadvantages in using a non hashing client.

There are only multiple advantages.

Maybe your gear/hardware cannot handle the complexities of a non hashing.

Also I dont know where you guys are from but computers can Multitask. So I dont know where you get the idea that you either borrow or game. I do more gaming at lans than I do borrow by far.

Not really, our 1st LAN had consoles and PC's but now we split it two separate days. I looked on the DC++ server there wasn't that much in the way of fine traffic 400Gb for the day.

A lot Lans have tried the sharing at different times... and it did not work at all

in no way am i trying to say that We should have a Lan about file leeching!!!!!!!! All this was about is to get leeching out of the way so we can play games lol! I enjoy nothing more then playing games and you should all know that if your a reg at SCL Smile

hashing takes up CPU usage and all the bandwidth to you HDD's so it makes gaming difficult getting into games. loading ect

But i totally understand from your point Happy don't fix it unless its broke. But it could speed thing up.

UPDATE:
PhantomDC is a great client. Tested it for 24 hours with 6 people last yesterday and last night and today with PtokaX 0.3.3.0.

Oh and Happy whats the computer that your DC++ server is called???????? Say if its "GamingPC" then instead of us typing in 192.168.1.200 to connect all you have to do is type in GamingPC instead of 192.168.1.200 and it works. So if you change the name of the computer to SCLDC or something. Its just of of those tiny things thats cool with DC++

So your not gunna hash? That's fine. If people ask you for stuff and you get sick of explaining that you don't want to hash I will even deal with those people for you. But with the performance differences that we have measured we will not be reverting to a landc client or one of their variants.

Quote:
And I dont know where people are get 50kbs speeds from. Every lan I go to I can download off people at around 80m/b sec and upload at that as well.

The problem has that we have with non-hashing clients is that when there are 4+ clients downloading anything the transfer speed drops to below 500 kb/sec, sometimes even as far as slow as 50 kb/sec (please note that this measurement is taken from our fileserver. Not any other computer on the network). The cause i suspect is due to the hard disks spending all of their time on seek operations rather then actually doing data throughput and/or packet collisions. This problem is not limited to the DC++ protocol as I have seen in it in other protocols eg FTP, SMB.

At every LAN we have at least 3-4 people who have a mirror of the popular content on the file server which allows the segmented downloading feature of the hashing client to shine.

LANDC++ will operate and connect to the hub, however will not interact with the hashing clients which is why we don't want anyone to use it.

ok i think ill give this one to happy from the things put on the table.

Considering SCL in the only place i can use my gaming skills (and games got me into PC's in the 1st place) :)and my 1k+ of hours spend in front on the pronzz machine cod. So i can safely say that gaming is why i go and that's why i will continue to go

I think this thread is done and dusted.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
