Hi all,

I decided many moons ago that after our (Myself and Asassin/Veilside) first Mdore lan running the comps that I would put up a thread asking for constructve criitisism. So here it is.

I believe our first one was a great success, we had few problems. We kept to within 30 minutes of the time shedule (pizza's threw us out) and everyone seemed to have fun!

We'll definately be looking to make CoD 4v4 a regular event at each lan, reguardless of prize avaliability. I'll chat to Haapy in reguards to making it a yearly ladder of sorts with major prizes at the end, or something... Thinking out aloud here, might not happen. Though it would be good to see regular teams competing!

So spill it out people, what didn't you like and how do you think we can improve it?

Matt and Pat.

just a breif view of my thoughts

WC3 - ran fine, only hitch was lack of players. that could be rectified somehow i'm sure as a LOT of people play it. maps got sorted which was great.

UT2k4 - tokara forest was a *bleep* map. FFA's are really a bad way to run a tournament if skill is what you wish to reward. various reasons like slow PC's etc and the lack of real map control, weapon choice, map movement, etc. Instagib i feel sorta the same about. fun, but probably not the best way to run it. better than a rocket spam game at least. overall i didnt mind. would be better if it was a proper 1v1 tourney with no ffa at all. more work on your part but it shouldnt be too hard. players would get more mileage too. more games, more fun.

overall my thumbs go up.

just a hint for the future if the lan gets bigger. for tourneys you're probably going to need to referee each match as people do all sorts of lame *bleep* to win. and you should look at rules to ban exploits and things. this is coming from QGL lan experience for like 2 or 3 years of competition CS. granted, thats cs ...

Thank you for the feedback Genocide!

Refereeing games may happen down the track once the lan is big enough to warrant it (stiffer competition).

As for your other comments I won't explain why we did it how we did it. But I will take your comments into consideration. (Will be placing all comments into a word document for future use Smile)

Matt.

CoD was fun except i think some one needs to handicap gonzo and his team Smile
maybe if we had a couple of organized practace comps for people to get better

farcry was pretty stupid as it just turned into a pistol comp with every one just going to one area and shooting like crap.

UT2004- sort of agree with genicide, too many people and too few weapons in the map.
maybe team deathmatch's to get the numbers down and then go death match on a smaller map.

the only thing that really annoyed me was that damn farcry server.

clearly it had sumthin wrong with it, either it wasnt a fast enough machine or it had hardware faults, seriusly!. farcry was the only thing i wanted to play and it was fine on the other servers (sobbsy's & sumonelses) but the scl one chucked a *bleep* when it was runnin and went even worse when the comp was on. DAMMIT! i coulda won but i couldnt even aim it was jerkin soooooooo bad, and it was happenen to everyone, and that why pretty much all of em left the game.

neway, my constructive criticsm is this: put FC on a different machine next time, move a game with lesser requirement to that one (CoD perhaps?).

seriously, or maybe a new server altogether.

who ended up wining FC by the way?

----

and as for ut, instagib sucked but not as much as that rocket launcher one the lan b4, so next time just simple standard 1v1 DM for the finals Wink

cod was kewl but in future i think u can just give the prize to gonzos team as their the only ones that practice the game, and all the rest of us only really get a chance to play computer gamez @ the lans.

same goes for warcraft, just give the prizes to genocide when he shows up Wink

and the only other thing i can thinks of is suspending the use of dc and shutting down the hubs while the comps are running cause the excessive network traiific really *bleep* up sum of the gamez.
Cool

Before people cry unfair at Gonzo's team I'll educate you all on something Smile

They only play together at the lans... Gonzo and Ghost play a little online 56k but not much... The other two im not sure of.

They have no great advantage.

Seems people want standard UT for the finals. I will take that into account next month.

As for far cry.... It wasn't the machine its on that I assure you.

It was running from mine for the comp... Was sitting at 40-60% cpu load and 270 out of 512mb of ram... My system wasn't struggling. It's definately some other problem.
Noting that we restarted with it on my machine after it was 6x (50ms as opposed to 300ms) on the dedicated server. Which was a P4 2.4c, 1gb pc3200.... Again, more than enough.

Matt.

ok firstly, we won, fair and square get over it. secondly it isnt my team, nobody is the captain of this clan, so dont imply that i am the leader, thirdly, we do very very little practise and i think just our skills help besides, 3/4 of our clan are doing year 12 this year (including myself)... so we have very little time. in summing up, i wont accept a handicap, prizes are ment for the best players, which our clan are. if you dont like that, get better. if you dont have the time for that, accept that you cant afford to get better. either way, its just a game, play for the fun, not the prizes.
Gonzo

feel free to merge this matt, he he he.

my suggestion being, keep on at the CoD 4v4... people wil get better before they get worse, and id love some competition (like last time with harass and assassin).

farcry was failure, limit the amount of players and choose a less demanding map. its a fun game and you executed the comp well, but the problem lies within the game itself.

ut2k4, didnt play but heard it was good.

WC3, keep this as a regular too. try and rustle up more interest, genocide will be beaten eventually.

It was also run on my machine at the nambour LAN (dedi) and experienced similar prob's, and I can say my machine isn't lacking grunt. Also ALL servers are on gigabit for max bandwidth.
We also ran FarCry on a few different machines to see if that would rectify the problem....which didn't make that much of a difference.
Further more, it runs fine if there's less than about 10-12 people on the 1 server...a fully loaded server is a different story.
In my opinion, the server code for FarCry is dodgy as....and will be taken into concideration IF we decide to do another FarCry comp.

i really enjoyed that overnight lan, it was by far the best lan we've had so far, the CoD 4 vs 4 comp was bloody great (even though we got knocked out first round) we had a 10:10 match and it when to sudden death where a slip up on my team (*cough SOMEONE TK CACHE cough*) screwed us up bad and we ended up loosing, still was alot of damn fun...
Now i know u fellas dont want to here this, but i think a CS:CZ 2 vs 2 comp would be bloody sick, at about 1pm we had around 12 ppl in the cs:cz server and i asked all of them if they wanted the comp and all 12 agreed, i also know that atleast another 4-5 players who didnt attend the lan (Pyrosleek) etc would love a 2 vs 2 comp of this...
now let me see WC3 had .... 8 ppl in it, and CS:CZ if a comp was run would have double, and would be shick Very Happy
Cache's Thoughts for next SCL: Keep CoD 4 vs 5, Keep WC3 1 vs 1, Drop FarCry, Add CS:CZ 2 vs 2 Razz

Thanks for all the replies guys... So far, all concerns are well within the limits of labelling it a success. Cool
